Mike swept the flashlight in a tight arc as he walked toward the tomb in the mine, watchful for aliens. He knew for sure they were here now because they’d taken the woman and the little girl and he had to be careful. He couldn’t save them if he got himself killed.

He felt for the screwdriver in his pocket and gripped the handle tightly. If you couldn’t burn them to death, screwdrivers were the next best way to kill them because you had to take out their eyes. That’s where their souls were and if you didn’t get rid of the soul, they could come back, and they’d be mad. Most people didn’t realize that and he wished movies about aliens were more realistic. It would probably save lives.

When he reached the fence, he clicked off his flashlight and climbed through. It was safe to navigate by starlight now because there was no more danger—aliens couldn’t stand to be around the dead. That was another weakness that people didn’t know about.

The musty smell of the tomb was comforting as he settled into the soft darkness and lit several small candles. He momentarily lost himself in the hypnotizing beauty of the flames. They were so tiny, but so powerful. A single spark could ignite a fire that would burn for miles and destroy millions of acres, killing all the aliens in its path. Aliens feared fire more than screwdrivers. He thought about Sam Eastwood and his brush with death and realized he should write a survival manual about these things he knew to help people like him.

His mummy friends were in the same place they’d always been. It really was surprising what happened to bodies in the desert. The fat man who smelled had been right about that.

Mike sat down in the sand and ran his hands along the dry, wizened remains, absorbing their power. It was more important than ever to build up his protective shield with the aliens so close. But what you took had to be replaced or it wouldn’t work anymore. He knew they liked beef jerky because it was always gone when he came back, so he dumped a packet all around them and arranged it carefully.

When Sam Eastwood came to the gas station again, he would give him the biggest bag Lenny kept in stock and tell him the truth about how to use it. He was nice and if anybody needed a protective shield, he did. When they didn’t get you the first time, they always came back. Sam Eastwood would need a good screwdriver, too, and he had plenty to share.
